We don't replace solar.
We complete it.
Wood-chip combined heat and power (CHP) for cold-climate households, farms, and light-commercial operations.
The Problem
Cold climates have a winter energy gap
Heating dominates energy spend — often more than 60% of annual costs. Grid reliability is weakest precisely when winter demand peaks. And solar generation collapses 60–70% in northern winters, when sun angles are low, days are short, and panels are covered in snow.
Solar handles summer beautifully. What handles February?
Cold-climate households pay high prices for inferior resilience — burning propane at $22–30/MMBtu or heating oil at $18–25/MMBtu, with no clean alternative that works when they need it most.
The Solution
The Arboreal CHP platform converts clean wood chips into simultaneous heat and electricity at approximately 80% overall efficiency — heat-first design means the thermal output comes first, with electricity as the valuable co-product. The system performs best in exactly the conditions where every competing renewable technology performs worst.
Combined heat & power (CHP) from locally sourced wood chips
01 — Power
10 kW Electric
Dispatchable AC power output, grid-tied with automatic islanding. Scales modularly to 20 kW and 40 kW. Generates approximately 39,400 kWh annually at 45% capacity factor through the heating season..
02 — Heat
70 kWth Thermal
Space heating and domestic hot water from the same combustion cycle. Delivers approximately 700 MMBtu of thermal energy per year — replacing a propane or heating oil boiler entirely.
03 — Fuel
Clean Wood Chips
Clean, untreated wood chips at 20–30% moisture content. Grow your own or sourced from regional forestry, tree service, and land-management operations. Approximately 15 tons per year at $45-90/ton delivered.
04 — Efficiency
~80% Overall
Heat-first design captures thermal energy that conventional power generation wastes. The combination of electrical and thermal output at 80% efficiency makes this the most resource-efficient heating solution available.
05 — Resilience
Grid-Independent
Automatic islanding means the system continues operating during grid outages. On-site fuel storage provides days to weeks of energy independence. No weather dependency. No cloud coverage risk. No winter performance gap
06 — Scale
10Kw to 40 kW
Modular architecture allows installation of a single 10 kW base unit for residential use, expanding to 20 kW or 40 kW configurations for farms and light-commercial operations without redesign.
